Get Help for Anxiety, Depression, and Overwhelming Emotions. Develop Emotional Resilience.
Emotions give color and meaning to life. They tell you what matters to you and tune you in to your needs. They help you connect to your “gut sense” for countless daily decisions. And when you feel emotionally safe and connected, relationships become a reliable source of personal strength and joy.
But all too often we struggle with emotions. They can be overwhelming and even scary, like explosive anger or panic. Emotions can take us on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. And we can have a hard time making sense of conflicting feelings. Or we can lose touch with our emotional experience. We may shut down, feeling isolated and uninspired.
Met with emotional resilience, life’s challenges don’t bend you out of shape. You can meet these challenges with flexibility and stay grounded in the face of change.
I firmly believe that we all have hard wired abilities for emotional resilience. But we also have our personal vulnerabilities and even the most resilient person can get overwhelmed in a crisis. Emotional resilience as I see it has four dimensions that can be developed:
- Mindfulness: Meet your present-moment experience with awareness and self-compassion.
- Regulation: Avoid emotional flooding and shutting down.
- Choice: Be able to think before you act and redirect disruptive impulses.
- Literacy: Understand your and others’ emotions and communicate effectively.
The good news is that you are not stuck with your current level of emotional resilience since it is not an inborn trait. Emotional resilience can be brought forward with heartfelt attention and in connection with an attuned other. By being a compassionate, engaged and responsive therapist, I help you to build your emotional resilience. Together we work to strengthen your innate ability for mindfulness, regulation, choice and literacy so you can be at your best meeting life’s challenges.
